WHO WE ARE
The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) is one of the major research universities in Finland. Its campuses are located in Joensuu, Kuopio and Savonlinna, and its four faculties offer teaching in more than a hundred major subjects. Digitarium is the joint digitisation centre of the University of Eastern Finland and the Finnish Museum of Natural History. Digitarium is located at the School of Computing at UEF in Joensuu, and is currently being supported by the European Structural Funds. See www.digitarium.fi.
WHAT OUR EXPERIENCE IS
With a staff of ten and ten trainees, Digitarium is a service centre whose main experience is in mass-digitisation of biological collections, imaging the specimens, and georeferencing biological materials. Digitarium also is a research unit for biodiversity informatics. Currently in focus is in development of use cases and workflows for the Biodiversity Virtual e-Laboratory, see www.biovel.eu.
WHAT WE DO IN EU BON
- UEF is leading the WP2 for Data Integration and Interoperability, and oversees designing an information architecture for EU BON that is compatible with European and global cyber-infrastructures for biodiversity.
- UEF coordinates the global informatics task force of EU BON.
- The work also includes specification, testing, and advice in development of the EU BON data provider tools, registry, and portal, and support to the helpdesk and training programme.
