Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM)
WHO WE ARE
The Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM) is a major research institute that combines modern working methods with a venerable tradition dating back to the founding of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences by Linnaeus and his contemporaries. Now an independent government institution, it is situated adjacent to the Stockholm University campus. Collections include 10 M biological, paleontological, and geological specimens. The research departments employ 160 scientific and technical staff members and the research covers a wide range of disciplines within the natural sciences. The combination of scientifically important collections, world-leading expertise and advanced analytical equipment creates a stimulating environment that attracts around 600 visiting scientists annually. More than 500,000 visitors come each year to see the exhibits, making the museum one of the most popular sites in Stockholm.
WHAT OUR EXPERIENCE IS
NRM is an active member in a number of European and global initiatives, such as CETAF, GBIF, FishBase, CBOL, and GEOTRACES. NRM is one of the largest partners in Synthesys, providing first-class access to its facilities. NRM was work- package leader in LifeWatch (planning phase) and is a major partner in the implementation of Swedish LifeWatch. The museum also hosts the joint Nordic NORDSIM2 facility.
WHAT WE DO IN EU BON
In WP 1, NRM will develop and provide training and support for an integrated open-source system (DINA) offering web-based collection management and data mobilization functionality. NRM will also perform gap analyses of biodiversity data available to EU-BON. In WP 3, NRM will develop improved interactive visualization tools for policymakers and the general public based on previous work in the AquaMaps project.
IN EU BON WE MAINLY CONTRIBUTE TO
WP 1 Data sources, gap analysis and data mobilization
WP 3 Improving tools and methods for data analysis and interface
